Update on my Cancer Battle
Hey family. It’s been quite some time since I’ve written anything here. This has been mostly due to me working on my forth coming book with Brazos Press. I’m really excited about this book. It will explore the intersections of race, disability, and religion. The main goal of the book is to expose the ways in which ableism fuels racism and the ways in which Western Christianity has played a significant role in building images, idols, and institutions that support ableism and racism. The book isn’t set to be released until 2024 but we are hard at work getting the manuscript ready for publication.
Now to the main reason for this post. I Just wanted to give you a quick update. After discovering that the cancer I had came back in June of 2022, I’ve been undergoing treatment and preparing for surgery. In the fall of 2022 I underwent Proton Therapy Treatment which is a powerful targeted type of radiation therapy that is good for people like me who have re-radiation in the same area as a previous treatment. I had a total of 26 treatments which happened twice daily. Needless to say the treatment was intense.
I originally thought that after a Thanksgiving vacation with the family that I would return to having surgery sometime in December of 2022. After several weeks of healing after the treatment scans showed that I still had significant swelling so my surgeon decided to push my surgery back to January, giving me the full three months post treatment to heal.
My wife and I had a cruise to Mexico planned for our 22nd wedding anniversary in January so the surgeon decided that it would be good for us to keep our plans and he could perform the surgery in February without any risk in delaying it.
My surgery was originally scheduled for February 15th, but my most recent CT scan showed some tiny spots on my lungs. Doctors said it could be anything but they want me to do a PET/CT Scan to determine if it might be cancer spreading before they do the operation. So my surgery has again been postponed and the new scans will happen on February 17th.
So here’s where I need your support. Please pray that the spots on the lungs turn out to be nothing. I’ve had a virus (not Covid) so it’s possible that what they saw may have been the beginning of that viral infection. All in all I’m asking you to pray that the spots prove to not be cancerous and that we can return to completing my treatment successfully with the aforementioned surgery.
Thanks for your love and support!
